The Tim Russert Department of Communication and Theatre is the destination major for studying the theory and practice of effective and ethical communication, instilling in students the passion and talent for inquiry, integrity, and involvement, thereby continuing the legacy of the department’s namesake and renowned communicator, Tim Russert ’72.

The Tim Russert Department of Communication and Theatre educates students to become critical thinkers trained in advocacy and effective communicators able to integrate theory and ethical principles in their professions while fostering awareness of diverse cultures and developing communication styles and technologies.

We are guided by three principles:

Inquiry – be a critical thinker
Integrity – make ethical decisions
Involvement – be a leader in professional and public life

Our graduates have the knowledge and ability to create, present, evaluate, and analyze messages in a variety of media and arenas. Our graduates go on to work in public relations, television, radio, film, corporate communication, social media, and theatre. Tim Russert ’72, one of è��APP’s most beloved graduates, passed away June 13, 2008, at the age of 58. A well-known face of NBC’s political talk show, Meet the Press, Russert was a trusted figure in the media. As a tribute to his legacy, in 2009 è��APP renamed the Department of Communication and Theatre in his honor.

-President George W. BushHailing from Buffalo, New York, Russert quickly became an integral part of the è��APP community. During his time at è��APP he was elected Student Union President. Russert also won the Robert Beaudry Man of the Year Award in his senior year. The university awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1997. His dedication and support for è��APP and Cleveland were always evident. Russert created The Tim Russert Endowed Scholarship at è��APP. This scholarship is awarded annually to a high school
